Halloween 2013: On-trend costumes

If you're weary of witches, done with demons and so over spirits, get with the times and opt for Halloween fancy dress that's on-trend for 2013. Whether you want frightening, fun or fabulous, take your inspiration from film, fashion and anything else that caught your eye this year for an attention-grabbing costume.

Gatsby Glamour
Baz Luhrman's glitzy adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby had us drooling over the gorgeous costumes, wild parties and of course, Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby. Now that Halloween has made over-the-top costumes totally acceptable, take your chance to channel the style of the Roaring Twenties. While the crystal 'Chandelier Dress' Miuccia Prada designed for Carey Mulligan's Daisy might be a bit of a stretch, put your own spin on flapper fashion in fringed dresses, jewelled shoes and feathered headbands.

Zombie Nation
The success of cult series The Walking Dead and rom-zom-com Warm Bodies have made zombies a huge trend this year. Suitably gory and brilliantly versatile, zombies can be used in conjunction with another theme for a truly original Halloween costume: think zombie cowboys, animals or doctors and nurses. Get creative with some fearsome face paint and plenty of fake blood for an easy way to an inventive and gruesome look.

Eighties Ever After
Classic eighties trends like shoulder pads, slogan tees and neon were everywhere this year, with the Victoria and Albert Museum even dedicating an exhibition entitled "Club to Catwalk" to the flamboyant fashions that emerged from the decade's lively London club scene. Halloween is a time to celebrate all things scary, so embrace the decade's terrifying trends with big hair, legwarmers and lots of Lycra.

Gory Goddess
The release of the second Thor film is set to remind us why the old stories are the best. Packed with monsters, gods and plenty of raunch, myths and legends provide the perfect inspiration for a spooky and original costume. Dress as a warrior goddess, a cheeky nymph or a mean Medusa for a brainy and brilliant twist on Halloween.

  1. I went as a flapper dancer two years ago and I got such a mixed response. It was mainly boys that were like "What are you?", but other girls loved it! Might bring out the old costume this year, hope people get it this time aha!

    These are great ideas :-)
